Why does this site look so "generic" and plain?

First, I'm not a web designer. Second, I actually miss when people built websites - no matter how crappy they looked, they weren't cookie-cutter, they weren't riddled with 20 MB of JavaScript, they weren't just bland. Websites had personality. And that's why this site looks like this.
